Organizing your Graphics Collection

Monday, May 19th, 2008

This post should have really been near the beginning, but I forgot about it, since I’m so use to just “doing it” instead of telling how to do it.  So, here it is, albeit late.  To make your job of designing webpages easier, you should be organizing your graphics collection by topics/subjects or items.

Take all of the “people” graphics you have (or acquire in the future) and place them all in a folder called “people.”  Then take all of the buy it now buttons you have and stick them in a different folder called “buy it now buttons.”  Continue until you sort all of your graphics out in this manner.  It may be a pain to do it right now, especially if you have a large collection already, but this will save you A LOT of time in the future when you make additional pages.  Take all these folders, and place them inside another folder named “graphics.”

You should also do the same with any templates you may have. (sorted by subject, then put inside the main “templates” folder).

I take it a step further, to avoid any confusion, since I do other things besides web work on my computer, and then place the graphics folder, template folder, etc., inside yet another folder which I call “web tools.”  This folder then resides on my desktop.  This sure beats having 50 different folders on your desktop!  Plus you can relatively easily find exactly what it is you are looking for when you are done organizing your graphics collection and all the other items you use most.
