Got a Great Idea for a Website?

Friday, May 9th, 2008

I’m sure you probably have many ideas for starting up a website.  Is it a great idea?  Have you done research on it to make sure you’re not the only one who thinks it’s a great idea for a website?

It takes a lot of pre-planning to setup a website.  Or should I say, a lot of planning if you want it to be useful, functional, and serve an actual purpose (like generating you some cash).

For instance, I have about 12 hours into this website so far, and as far as you can see, it doesn’t have much going on as of yet!  Most of this time was spent in research & designing just the homepage.

Yes, research takes time to do.  Better spent now before you produce a website, then after.

I sort of fell onto doing this site.  I read many different websites & blogs, and kept noticing that people would constantly be asking others for advice on what to do with a website, how to accomplish certain goals, specifics about one aspect of creating a website, etc.  Sure, there are a lot of other sites out there that get into great detail about HOW to do, usually, ONE thing that’s based around making a website.  But what about all the “other” things that must be done?  I didn’t find very many places that offered a “start to finish” teaching method.  So voila! that was my idea, and here we are.

Of course, your own research may not be that easy.  There’s lots of holes to be filled in almost any area (niche markets), and when you run across one, well that just makes things really easy then.  But if you want to start something specific in mind, you may find it has way too much competition for you to even think about getting into that market.  Then its back to the drawing board, or you must narrow the market down into a smaller niche.  Look around, keep searching deeper & deeper, and you just may find that great idea you’ve been looking for.  Or perhaps NOT looking for.  Many successful businesses have been starting by locating a market that isn’t being served yet, but you won’t know unless you do some research.

I have got a great idea for a website, and you’re looking at it.  THAT was step one, get a great idea.  It’s just the beginnings of a long procedure of things to do.
